  General Considerations

What is a Log Building?

A Logstyle building is the most natural solution for that extra space you’ve dreamt of. We use only Northern European Spruce or Pine, selected from well sustainable, well managed sources, which provides natural strength, durability and insulation. Refreshingly healthy, the walls of a log building, whilst solid, are very breathable, ensuring buildings remain cool in the summer and warm in the winter. At Logstyle our buildings are designed to last a lifetime.

Do you do bespoke buildings?

Yes. The plans and specifications shown on Logstyle’s website are only an indication of the possibilities. Our versatile, modular construction technique allows endless variety and means that few Logstyle log buildings are ‘standard’. Logstyle offers full design and technical advisory services, and will prepare sketch plans and costings for specific projects.

Energy & Environmental

Are log buildings energy efficient?

Yes. Wood is one of nature’s best insulators, and solid log walls are among the most efficient wall systems in use today. Logstyle wall structures are designed for tightness and lasting integrity. This combined with the use of high quality roof and floor insulation, and the installation of high quality windows and doors will ensure that your Logstyle building uses remarkably little energy to stay comfortable all year round.

What type of heating would you recommend in my log building?

In our smaller garden buildings range we usually install electric powered convection heaters. We would advise further on larger projects. There is also the option to install more eco-friendly alternatives...

  Construction

How is a log building constructed?

Our triple tongue groove “Log-lock” construction method creates buildings that are strong, durable and quick to assemble.

Walls: constructed from 45mm, 70mm and 90mm x 160mm rebated draught proof interlocking corner joints, incorporating a triple tongue and groove construction from high grade European spruce/pine

Roof: A purlin or rafter construction with 70mm x 200mm timbers. A 22mm x 160mm tongue and groove roof deck, covered with Katepal bitumen roofing material (meeting the requirements of European Standard EN544) lay on a breathable membrane.

Ceiling: Insulated with a multi-layer insulation blanket giving 14 layers of insulation made up of 2 outer layers of metallic foil, 2 layers of flexible wadding, 6 layers of close cell foam and 4 further layers of metallic foil, covered with a vapour barrier and 22mm x 160mm tongue and groove ceiling board.

Floor: Insulated with a selection of double foil composite board within the floor void, with a 28mm x 150mm tongue and groove floor board.

Joinery: High performance, purpose made doors and windows, manufactured in laminated northern European pine with a three lacquer impregnated finish. All window designs are tilt and turn offering excellent security benefits fitted with Assa locking mechanisms and toughened low ‘E’ sealed double glazing as standard. All doors are fitted with high security locks.

How long will my log building take to construct?

Our smaller garden building range typically takes 1-2 days to erect. We would advise on an individual level for larger projects.

Who do you use to construct the log buildings?

We use our in-house trained team of specialists who have collectively over a hundred years of experience in the construction of log buildings.

What type of foundation is required?

n general a log home can be erected on any type of suitably designed foundation popular in your geographic area. These include concrete slab, and pillar and beam. Your construction blueprints will include specific dimensions for construction based on your desired construction method.

What products do you use to treat the wood?

Wall logs are cut from aged Northern European Spruce and Pine with a minimum growth period of 75 years, and then kiln dried to a moisture content <16%. All timber is then treated on site to clients colour choice from our standard range of micro porous based treatment systems.

What finish will be used on the interior walls of my log building?

Although it is not necessary to apply finish to the inside log walls, doing so has certain advantages. A finished wall is much easier to clean, and the finish seals the wood, making it resistant to stains from oils, grease, and dirt. Also, most finishes, whether natural or containing stain, will enhance the grain and knot characteristics of the wood, making it more attractive. It is recommended that logs be lightly sanded before finishing as this removes any marks created during shipment and construction. A range of interior finishes are available.

Services

What services are provided to my log building?

All service installation work will be priced according to your individual requirements. Services will normally terminate at the foundation for final connection by others. A price for connecting to the existing services will be subject to a survey and written quotation.

What maintenance is required on my Log Building?

Like all buildings, log structures do require periodic maintenance to stay in best condition. The external walls are painted with preservative during construction and, due to the absorption qualities of the wood; they should be painted again the first year. Thereafter they should be painted every two to four years depending on their specific location

  Planning and Regulatory Compliance

Will I require planning permission for my log building?

In most cases, planning permission for construction in your garden is not required. The majority of Logstyle buildings are under 30sq.m. so they should not need Building Regulations approval providing they are sited in excess of 5 metres from the dwelling house and no more than 4 metres high. Subject to the provisions of the Permitted Development Act.

Do you provide plans if I do need Planning Permission?

Yes, this service can be provided. Further information is available on request.
